They called him a hero. All Jon ever wanted was to make it home.

They called her crazy. All Emma ever wanted was to warn them.

After the war, everything changed.

It's been nine years since Captain Jonathan Grant walked away from everything he knew, everything he was ever told he was supposed to be. Sheltered with his family in their small town in south Missouri, the entire world could fall apart around them and it wouldn't faze him one bit, as long as they still had each other. But when his wife, Emma, begins seeing strange images in her sleep, Jon will find himself thrown back into a role he never wanted in the first place.

In a world still trapped in the aftermath of a devastating world war, Emergency Manager and Crisis Psychologist Dr. Emma Grant has been asked to speak at the first Constitutional Convention since the United States was founded. With the states coming together in a dangerous last-ditch effort to end a crippling energy crisis, and the Constitution hanging by a thread, Dr. Grant and her husband Jon must fight to keep the American government from falling apart. But when the convention takes a deadly turn, will they lose what may be their last chance to stop a man determined to sabotage everything—

Just to see them fail?

When Darkness Builds is the first installment in The Caldera Series. It’s the story of Jon and Emma Grant, and the power they’ve been given together.

To save the children of men.

“We are the choices we make. Soon we must all choose between who we want to be, and who we know we were born to be.”

Not your typical dystopian tale, long-researched political thriller When Darkness Builds features richly developed characters, deep interpersonal relationships, and internal conflicts just as dramatic as their external counterparts. Paranormal elements, time-tested and freshly new romances, and the beginning of an epic battle for the fate of all mankind makes Book One of The Caldera Series...

“a fantastic story, so well crafted, a really delightful read!”

-Editor Tamara Hart Heiner

“Really, really good. Amazing in places.”

-Author Michelle Pennington

When Darkness Builds The Caldera Series Volume 1 M C Sutton 9780692886410 Books

I'm anxiously anticipating the sequel to this book. Sutton has created something that pulls the reader into the story and doesn't let go even after it ends. I read this over two months ago and still find myself pondering where the story will go from here.

At times the pace slows down a bit, but rather than take away from the story, I feel its necessary to convey thought processes and back stories of some of the characters. Sutton has also woven a quite bit of mystery into the story, which is probably the reason I'm impatient for the sequel.

I recommend When Darkness Builds for both adults and teenagers. Its clean and well written with no sex or gore. Although due to its slightly darker tones, (acts of terrorism, end of the world scenarios) I would suggest caution for any readers 13 and under.

I never undertake reading a new author with any particular expectations, but somehow this book managed to blow my nonexistent expectations away all the same. The story opens as Emma, framed as a strong and capable Emergency Manager and Crisis Psychologist, coordinates the effort to save a refugee camp from a freak tornado. Good so far, I thought. I look forward to her leading the survivors to take on whatever menace is threatening this world.

Twenty-five pages in, my hopes had been thoroughly shattered. Within the first five pages, Emma needs to be rescued. This theme repeats itself with disturbing frequency. She faints into the arms of whichever strong masculine character happens to be nearby, and often is so overcome with fear, grief, or anxiety that she has to be physically carried from scene to scene. This leaves Jon, Emma's husband and the second protagonist, performing nearly all of the actual action in the book.

Sadly, Jon is even less likeable than Emma. His dismissal of Emma's traumatic nightmares makes it clear that he considers her crumbling mental health a burden, despite his gestures of affection. At one point he even drugs her drink when she refuses to take sleeping pills. If Emma were anyone I knew in real life, I would help her organize an escape plan to get away from him.

Stranger still is the plot itself. Jon and Emma live in a bizarre upper-middle-class world where everyone inexplicably knows each other or is somehow related, and all but a couple of the characters seem completely detached from whatever happened to make life so horrible for the rest of their nation. The plot has promising elements, but they never quite flesh out; the reader is left swimming in a sea of implausible family connections and unbelievable political machinations. Plot holes abound, and the whole thing has the feel of those cardboard set pieces you might see at a grade-school play an after-thought, just there to prop up the real star of the show.

What is the star of this show, you might ask? It's the drama. Emotional turmoil, grief, and romantic woes. It has all the hallmarks of a romance except the steamy interludes. Although it's not my cup of tea, When Darkness Builds may find fans in those who like romance-style writing and a plot that focuses heavily on interpersonal drama. I give it an (exceedingly charitable) two stars.
A good solid story of hope for a better world but that seems to be disappearing quickly. Jon just wants to keep his wife safe from even more danger but his wife Emma is always in the thick of it and this time it just might be the end of them.
Emma knows that he worries but she knows that she can make a difference to the future of the world but she just can't keep to the plan and that almost gets her killed. The world is changing for the worst and even more people are about to die and Emma will not be able to control that. Jon just doesn't know what to do anymore he left all the madness behind to live a quiet life with his wife & children but that doesn't seem to be happening and he can't leave Emma alone for too long as trouble follows her but this time the cost might be too high.
Can they stop the new threat or will their destiny be completely wrong? Not your average happy family life story. A great read though.
I enjoyed this book. It's about a family and their friends-like-family living in the midst of a political and economical dystopia. The world around them is falling to pieces, people are angry, unemployed, hungry. Natural disasters coupled with stupid political movements have chipped away at the world's governments. This book follows the Grant family, headed by Uncle Jack (the Vice President), Captain Grant (former POW and pilot), Dr. Emma Grant (a social psychologist), and their son Matt. Each member of this family possesses unusual talents, or gifts, which makes them uniquely situated to maneuver through the upheaval around them.

Pros I was fascinated by the characterization of Emma - I liked her and was frustrated by her. She has a heart of gold, but is often blinded by her compassion and need to save everyone. I liked her husband, Jon, much more. He's more down to earth - he wants to protect what's his and doesn't really care what happens to the rest of the world. How two people like this ended up together is a mystery, and you can see that for all their devotion to each other, they don't always agree with or LIKE one another in the moment. It will be interesting to see what happens to their relationship further on. I also found the "talents" aspect of this book really interesting and I wished they were better explained, much earlier in the novel. It's also a huge plus that the story involves other people in the family - from the grandparents down to the teenagers. You get the story through different perspectives and filters.

Cons Some of the passages I just skimmed over. The political information was given more room than necessary, in my personal opinion. And one character, Matt, dragged on a great deal about emotions. While it may have been related to his talent, I didn't much care for how descriptive it became. I really wish the talents would've been explored more from the beginning too, and that we would've had more information about the organization of such "marked" people earlier than we did (the end of the book). But these are all reader preferences.

Will I read the next book in the series? More than likely. -) That's an automatic 4-star rating for me. Are there issues to the plot and characterizations? Yes, but they're easily overlooked in the enjoyment of the story. Enjoy!
