Raped Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy is the brutally honest and horrifying story of one man’s lifelong battle with evil.
Larry Monte Jr. was raped by a Catholic priest beginning in 1972 when he was fifteen years old. The rapes went on for two years. Larry’s mental anguish, shame and torment have lasted thirty-eight years, and will never go away.
Larry’s story looks behind the curtain of what priest sexual abuse really is and how it permanently destroys lives. In graphic and horrifying detail, Larry tells what the Catholic Church’s man of God actually did to him in cheap motel rooms throughout the state of New Mexico and how it shattered his spirit and soul.
An Albuquerque businessman, Larry has shunned the safety of clinical and sanitized terms such as “sexual abuse” in favor of blunt, brutal, everyday language and detail. He hopes that in telling his story with such honesty the world will finally come to fully comprehend the absolute horror, degradation and evil that is “priest sexual abuse.”
He hopes also that the world, Catholics in particular, will wake up to this evil and demand that the Catholic Church and its raping priests be brought to justice.
Raped Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy edition by Larry Monte Dennis Domrzalski Religion Spirituality eBooks
This book gives a brutal and honest portrayal of child sexual abuse perpetrated by a Catholic priest/rapist on a devout 15 year old altar boy. It will be difficult to read for both those shy to explicit language and those readers who try to put themselves into the situation with their full imaginations. But the narrative is very insightful about a current societal problem that is often handled with kid gloves.I have known several people who have been sexually assaulted by priests or other men in positions of authority, and the patterns described by Monte are similar. He portrays with accuracy and vivid detail how victims manipulated, made to feel ashamed, made to fear telling anyone, threatened by suggesting the involvement of other siblings in the sick sexual world of his rapist, and misled about the Catholic faith so that they would better become that rapists’ sexual play things. The detail and emotion force us as readers to realize very, very clearly: these things really happen. Catholics should not take offense to this book; rather, Catholics should realize that Monte identifies an enemy of the church operating within, a type of enemy that still runs rampant in the institution.
The shortcoming of this book occurs with the attempts to condemn the Catholic Church as a whole. This is not to say, however, that there is nothing to condemn! This book, however, jumps from the vile acts of a rapist to church practices, without filling in the gaps in a reasoned, objective fashion. The book is all passion, which is great when it needs to be, but it lacks contemplative consideration. For example, we hear about Larry being a pious child who learned from priests and nun, but we would like to hear more detail about what he learned, and, more specifically, where he was mistaught. Similarly, when the book turns into a whole scale condemnation of Catholic practice, we would like to hear what specific practices have allowed rapists to flourish. And we would like to hear both of those things with as much attention to detail as the rapes themselves.
I present this suggestion, dare I say challenge, to Catholics. Several times in the book, Monte talks about penance. He says:
“If you want to do penance, here’s an idea: Go into those motel rooms with me as a fifteen-year-old with the piggish Smith and have him [censored]. And then endure him offering the sacrament of the mass.”
Of course, we cannot literally do this. But I’m sure many of you have prayed for victims of clergy abuse. So, I suggest instead this penance that we all need to do for those we have failed to love: read the book. And do not read it lightly; read it as if you were reading some great work of literature or philosophy; allow yourself to get caught up in what is happening; put yourself in Larry’s place. And if you do that, you will understand two things. First, you will understand why Monte feels the way he feels both about the Catholic Church and about sexuality. And second, and more importantly to what the book intends, you will understand why it is so horrible that both rapists and those who facilitate rape remain in the Catholic Church and feel inspired to do something to route the sick bastards out!

Raped Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy edition by Larry Monte Dennis Domrzalski Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
There is no one that is angrier that I am over sexual abuse of minors as has been revealed in the church. Of course, the Catholic Church is not alone in this. I understand that the author was a Catholic altar boy so it is his memories that he is sharing. In a very repetetive way. I understand anger and I agree with his anger. I agree with his bitterness, but his story to me had a few holes in it. Not too well written and not 100% credible, at least not to me it wasn't. Anger is justified in this case, as is bitterness toward the church that did not help him. And, for what ever reason they did NOT help him. That is his contention.
What bothered me is his attack on the church selling thier property and buildings and giving it to the poor. What poor? How long would it last? A day or two? Then where do the next hand outs come from? Sell the Washington Monument? Anger is fine but after 38 years of holding back, direct the venom in the right direction. Sorry, but this book could have said it all in less than 20 pages. To me it was just another hate monger trying to earn a buck too late. But I clearly thinkj that the rapists should be turned over to local police. Case closed on that one.
I understand he was offensive to make a point about the brutality. But I almost did not make it to the end and that is a very important part of the book.
This very compelling story should be read by all Catholics who sit in the pews and continue to give, their time, talents, and finance. This is a wake up call to all who concerned about our future generations, especially in light of the vatican's approval March 31 2014 of the United States Bishop's plan not requiring a presiding diocesan bishop to turn a known pedophile priest over to law enforcement or the appropriate authorities for prosecution.
Larry speaks his mind and no one can blame him. I know Larry and I am very happy he wrote this book that exposes the continual ongoing mess the Catholic church tries to hide underneath the table. This book was difficult to read for me at times as I was thinking, how can people be so ugly.
If you are still filling the coffers of the Roman Catholic Corporation, at least have the courage and decency to read Larry Monte's true account of how he was repeatedly raped by one priest and repeatedly assaulted in other ways by more wolves in shepherds' clothes.
This is not a 'church' and those who continue to treat it like a benevolent and Christian institution do so at the risk of their own souls because the facts prove otherwise and Christians are supposed to live in the light of the truth, not in the darkness of evil, lies, and the raping of children.
Monte give a most honest account, not just of the traumatic events he was forced to endure, but of his deepest feelings along the way. This book is a journey through the eyes and heart of a child who suffered the worst mankind has to offer, all thanks to Roman Catholic, Inc.
This book is beautifully written, in the form of letters to the Church, to fellow survivors, to practicing Catholics, etc. It is written with love, truth, and complete and unabashed honesty. It includes concise information that helps one get a clearer picture of the current (yes, current) Catholic scandal and a quick study on the formation and operation of the Servants of the Paraclete clergy treatment center in New Mexico.
Please, Catholics! Stay home this Sunday and, instead, read a copy of Raped Memories of a Catholic Altar Boy. Larry endured it. All you are asked to do is read about it. And then act. Jesus never called on his followers to sit on their hands, muzzled and powerless. As Larry reminds us, Christ warned, "In as mush as ye have done it to one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." Ignoring the survivors of priest/nun rape is to ignore Jesus himself. What kind of Christians do that?
God bless you, Larry, for writing this book!
