There's something so magical and fascinating about the idea of mermaids interacting with humans that it is hard to resist, so "don't resist' reading this fine, fine tale of such a thing happening. Author James Christopher puts some very nice surprises and twists in the story, and his characters live and breathe on the pages. I'm glad this is the first in a series, because i want more of these, and definitely more of Serene the mermaid.Product details

A fun and interesting take on an old legend. Full of twists and intrigue. Can not wait for the next one!
If a John Hughes movie merged with an action-adventure book and that love child was about mermaids, it would be this book. Prepare yourself for angsty teens, cheesy dad humor, and watery intrigue!
This first in a promised series was fun, suspenseful, and left me waiting for the next volume. Mr. Christopher captures the contemporary high school scene very well. The addition of a Texas coastal town and a society of mermaids and mermen with all the complex problems of any human society just seasons the mix to perfection. I'll be looking forward to the next book.
I gotta be honest...I'm probably not the intended audience for a book about Mermaids, but I was familiar with James Christopher's indie film work and I figured I'd give this a try. Well, everyone can put those fears aside, because this is a book that has something for everyone. It is well paced with great characters and it leaves me wanting more. I can't wait until the next book in this series and it looks like Mr. Christopher has a great career ahead of him not only as a filmmaker, but as a novelist as well.
I really enjoyed this YA novel, mostly because I've always been fond of the ocean & what young girl hasn't pretended to be a mermaid at one point or another?! The main characters of Ben & Chloe are very quick to like, as are Serene & Marion, which helps you keep rooting for them until the end of the book. The villains in the book are many, from "landees" to underwater creatures & mermen.
I also really got a kick out of the Marine Biology setting, as well as military uses of marine animals. The author seemed to know his stuff on both of these avenues, which makes it so believable.
I would highly recommend this as a Spring Break or Summer read for when you are just aching to get away to the beach & maybe can't. It made me long for a trip to Port Aransas or South Padre Island to be one with the water in the Texas Gulf & to continue my search to know if Mermaids really exist.
Very poor writing. The author spends all his time telling us instead of showing us. As a result the characters mean nothing and never grow or develop.
